How to Cope With Friends Who Turn Against You

One of the downsides of friendships is the potential for a friend to backstab or betray you. When a friend turns against you, it may feel like the end of the world, especially if this person is who you would normally turn to during times of need. Coping with friends who turn against you requires compassionate attention to your own emotions as well as closely considering the status of the current relationship and moving forward accordingly. Learn how to care for your hurt feelings and handle a disloyal friend, too.

EditSteps

EditDealing with Hurt Feelings

  1. Acknowledge the pain of disloyalty. It hurts to have someone turn against you or to find out someone you thought was a close friend may not really be who you thought. It's normal to be upset and there is no need to hide the fact that you are hurt.[1]
Deal With Long Distance Relationships Step 11.jpg
    • Acknowledge the pain by stating it aloud. Name the emotion that you are feeling and own your reaction to it. "I am disappointed because I placed my trust in someone who backstabbed me."
    • While you can acknowledge the feelings, remember you are the only one who controls how you react to this disloyalty. In some cases, this person may be treating you a certain way with the hope that you will react in a big way. It is far better to take a step back and reflect on how you are feeling, instead of acting out in the moment.
  2. Take time to reflect. Just as some romantic relationships benefit from a break, friendships can also benefit from time apart. Take this break to think about any major choices like confronting the friends or completely ending the friendships. You may find that you calm down after a few days, or you may find that during the break you actually feel better without the friends.
    Develop Passion Step 14.jpg
    • You can also use this time to consider opening yourself to making some new friends who are more supportive. Spend time with a few other acquaintances, classmates, or coworkers. Do you notice yourself liking being with these people over your other friends? Do you notice good qualities in these people that your other friends lack?
    • Another way to engage in reflection is to journal. Writing down the experience and your thoughts and feelings associated with it can be incredibly freeing and empowering.[2] You can even brainstorm ideas as to how you want to deal with the aftermath of a friend's betrayal.
  3. Practice regular self-care. Before you can even think about rebuilding trust with your friends, you have to first take care of you. We often put our own feelings on the back burner to avoid feeling bad ourselves or to avoid making others feel bad about their actions against us. Denying yourself time to care for your own needs does not lend itself to creating long-term, healthy friendships.[3]
    Express Anger Step 10.jpg
    • Forgive yourself for taking a chance on the friendship and to have whatever feelings you had in the moment after you found out about the betrayal. When someone steals from you or goes behind your back to do something it is easy to beat yourself up over letting anyone have the chance to use you.
    • Treat yourself kindly during this time. Do things you like to do—whether that is binge-watching your favorite TV series, getting a manicure, or spending time with family.
  4. Be the bigger person. Don’t entertain urges to get revenge or hold grudges. Try to forgive those that do you wrong, if only so you don’t have to carry the burden of anger. You may feel like you are letting the other person off too easy if you let go of the anger and move on. This is not the case. Holding onto the anger hurts you first and foremost. In many cases, the person you are angry with has already moved on. You take back your power by being the bigger person and not reacting in a vengeful way.[4]
Deal With Your Mother's Abusive Boyfriend Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Keep in mind that you can't control what other people do or say about you. Getting angry and nasty will not make you have any more control than you have now. And in the end, if your actions are not in line with your character or beliefs, you will likely feel ashamed or guilty for have acted outside your values.
    • For example, if a friend or classmate is spreading rumors about you, you can choose to not make the situation uglier by doing the same. Step back and come up with a less vindictive manner to handle the situation instead.
    • The old saying “fight fire with fire” really makes little sense in reality. You normally fight fire with water or something else that puts out the fire, right? Don't fuel the fire with attention or your own negative actions because all that happens then is a much bigger fire.
  5. Hang out with fun and supportive friends and family. It can be extremely comforting after betrayal to surround yourself with positive people who want nothing but the best for you. This not only helps you process and cope with a betrayal, but it also reaffirms your value as a person and a friend.[5]
Find Out Who Your Best Friends Are Step 14.jpg
    • For example, if one friend let you down, be sure to cherish your other friends who have consistently been loyal to you. Let these people know how much you appreciate them.

EditEvaluating Your Relationship

  1. Evaluate your friendship. When a friend who knows you well turns against you, it may affect your personal, social, or career standing. Depending on how much of an impact the rumor or betrayal may have had, you must decide if it’s better to ignore it or address the issue.
Forget the Boy You Loved Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    [6]
    • If the problem is simply with the one friend involving a minor issue, it's probably pretty safe to just ignore the friend. On the other hand, if your job is at risk or there are allegations that go beyond a small rumor that will blow over, you may need to take other steps to prevent the situation from getting worse.
    • Is everyone talking about the issue? Are there legal ramifications? How many people are aware of what happened? Asking these questions can help you discover the scope of the problem.
    • It may be helpful to talk with an unbiased party about what you can do to resolve this issue. In the end, you must trust your own judgment about how to handle it, but getting some sound advice could be beneficial.
  2. Combat negative effects. If the friend who turned against you spread rumors or bad-mouthed you to others, try to do what you can to counteract those negative perceptions of you.[7]
Get Back an Ex That You Dumped Step 10.jpg
    • You can try defending yourself or approaching certain people and trying to explain your side of the story with something like "Those rumors are not true..." Be aware, though, that there is always a chance people won’t want to listen.
    • Actions speak louder than words and may help you to repair your reputation much faster. Instead of wasting time trying to talk your way out of a rumor, use positive actions to show those around you the rumors are simply not true. If people called you a cheater, try to be transparent about your everyday operations to shut down the rumors.
  3. Decide whether or not to confront the person. There are going to be times when you need to say something and there are going to be times where you can just let whatever happened go. Use your judgment of your friend and the situation to determine if a response is necessary.[8]
Get Back an Ex That You Dumped Step 15.jpg
    • Think about the positive and negative consequences of confronting someone who hurt you. If you just drop the person as a friend, you will never have a chance to hear his side of the story and potentially clear up what may be a simple misunderstanding. You will also have the opportunity to express how you feel. On the other hand, the person may become verbally abusive or combative, leading to more hurt feelings.
    • If whatever happened between you and your friend seems out of character for him, this might be a time to practice some compassion and just let things go. This will be even truer if you know the friend is going through something and may have turned against you out of desperation.
    • If you do decide to address the issue, say something like “I heard you told our boss I cheated on the project. I’m really hurt by these accusations. I did my part fair and square. I'd like to know why you said those things.”
  4. Determine if you want to repair the friendship. This process is usually tied to balancing how much value you place in the relationship and what actually occurred. You may need to take a close look at this friendship and see if it’s worth fighting for. If the friend is not someone you consider to be close, it might be less stressful to walk away. If, on the other hand, this is a friendship you value, find a way to address the issue in a constructive yet firm way.[9]
Deal With Your Mother's Abusive Boyfriend Step 8.jpg
    • Even if this is a friendship you really value, there may be actions so unforgivable that the friendship will not recover. Before you take matters into your own hands, you must be absolutely sure the friend is responsible. Gather evidence that supports your findings before deciding to end the friendship. For example, if there is talk that your best friend is involved with your significant other, you would want to be almost 100% sure before making an accusation.
  5. Mend the friendship if you want. Make recommendations for how the person can prove her loyalty again. Take a step back and look at what caused your friend to turn on you. Was a friend at work feeling jealous of your accomplishments so she lied about the credit for your work? Take this as a compliment and create an opportunity for the friend to come clean and acknowledge your work.[10][11]
    Earn Trust Back Step 5.jpg
    • Let your friend know that you do not take forgiveness lightly. Say something like "I forgive you and want to move on from this situation. But, I want you to know that you really hurt me and I may not be able to continue the friendship if this happens again."
    • Set clear boundaries with your friend so he or she understands why you are putting whatever happened behind you. She should know that going forward you expect total loyalty so there is no opportunity to let it happen again. For example, if this was a work project, going forward use a new system of dividing up the work so each team member clearly has his or her own “part”. If the issue came up at home, change the level of access this friend has to your home so there isn't a way for this to happen again.

EditLooking at the Big Picture

  1. Focus on your own behavior. Strive to be a better friend so you attract more loyal friends. Look at the healthy friendships you have mutually enjoyed and learn from those. Learn to be a better you by not allowing yourself to get caught up in drama at work or at home. Let go of unhealthy relationships.[12]
Give Your Girlfriend an Unforgettable Birthday Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Do not get caught up in a toxic circle of doing negative things because others do them. You will not find friends that are trustworthy if they cannot trust you. When you say you’ll do something, do it. If you make plans with others, follow through with them. Doing small deeds can go a long way to helping you build trustworthiness.
  2. Consider the type of friends you tend to make. The only thing you have absolute control over is you. You get to decide how you react to certain people and who gets space in your life. You do not have to remain friends or even friendly with someone just because you were friends since you were kids or you happen to work in the same office.[13]
Get Your Crush Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • If you find work friends are harder to trust because of competition at work, make clear boundaries about not bringing work home. You do not have to be friends or social with co-workers if it is only leading to problems at work.
    • The same goes for friendships you make in other settings. Are these people positive influences? Are they using you? Look at the types of friends you have and the kind of friendship obstacles you encounter. Maybe it’s a good idea to reevaluate all your friendships to see if you are making smart, healthy choices in your relationships.
  3. Don’t compromise your personal values for friendships. This includes hiding things about yourself or family just to keep certain friends. You may find friends act differently in certain contexts and that you cannot always depend on certain friends to be consistent. If you lose a friendship because you need to focus on family, then it wasn't a healthy relationship to begin with.[14]
Get Over a Guy Who Doesn't Care About You Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • This also includes ignoring the actions of a friend in the name of friendship. You have the right to stand up for your beliefs. In addition, you should not be pressured to look the other way if a friend does something you feel is wrong or violates the law.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes

Sweet, chocolatey, warm, and flavorful, hot chocolate pancakes are ideal for chilly mornings in the cold season. Topped off with a creamy chocolate sauce and mini marshmallows, or perhaps something more elaborate, these pancakes may become your new favorite breakfast meal.

  • Makes: 12 pancakes

EditIngredients

Hot Chocolate Pancakes

  • 1½ cups dark hot chocolate
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • vanilla extract
  • all-purpose flour
  • dutch-process cocoa powder
  • baking powder
  • salt

Chocolate Fudge Sauce

Hot Chocolate Sauce

  • maple syrup
  • hot chocolate powder

Other Optional Toppings

  • (50 g) mini marshmallows
  • peppermint extract and 10 peppermint candies, crushed
  • Chocolate-hazelnut spread
  • Miniature chocolate chips
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Whipped cream

EditSteps

EditMaking the Pancakes

  1. Preheat the griddle to medium-low heat and spread butter over it.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 1.jpg
    • For an electric griddle, preheat it to 350 F (177 C).[1]
  2. Combine the wet ingredients. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the hot chocolate, vanilla, and egg until well combined.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 2.jpg
  3. Mix the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, sift or whisk them together the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder until properly combined.[2]
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 3.jpg
  4. Combine all the ingredients. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients into the well, and use a whisk or rubber spatula to combine everything.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 4.jpg
    • Don’t overmix the batter, because this can develop the gluten in the flour and make for chewy rather than fluffy pancakes.[3]
  5. Set the batter aside to rest for 30 minutes. This will give the flour time to absorb the moisture in the batter. It will also give the gluten time to relax, and this will make for light and fluffy pancakes.[4]
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 5.jpg
    • If in a hurry, you can skip the resting step, but your pancakes won’t be quite as fluffy.
  6. Pour ¼ cup of pancake batter onto the griddle. This will make one pancake.[5] Repeat for however many pancakes your griddle will hold, leaving enough space between them to allow for flipping.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 6.jpg
  7. Cook the pancakes. When bubbles form and start to pop, after two to three minutes, use a spatula to flip the pancakes.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 7.jpg
    • Once they’ve been flipped, cook the pancakes for an additional two minutes, or until they're golden brown on both sides.[6]
  8. Lay the pancake on a large plate, or on a cooling rack over a baking sheet in the oven.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 8.jpg
    • An oven isn't necessary, but if you're doing a big batch, it's the best way to keep cooked pancakes warm while the others are in the griddle. Pre-heat the oven to 225 F (107 C), and then place the plate or cooling rack and pan in there.[7]
  9. Repeat until there is no more pancake batter. When the first batch of pancakes is in the oven, add another tablespoon (14 g) of butter to the hot griddle. Add more batter and continue the process until all the pancakes are done.[8]
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 9.jpg
  10. Serve. Place a pancake on a serving plate and garnish as desired. Enjoy!
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 16.jpg

EditExperimenting with Toppings

  1. Get creative with your toppings. One of the best things about hot chocolate pancakes is the variety of ways you can garnish them with different sauces and toppings, so you can even turn basic pancakes into a fun breakfast bar event.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 11.jpg
  2. Drizzle a chocolate fudge sauce on top. In a saucepan or double boiler over low heat, mix the chocolate chips and light cream using a whisk. Shut off the stove and allow the fudge sauce to cool until lukewarm. Drizzle the sauce over each pancake or on top of a stack.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 12.jpg
  3. Try a hot chocolate sauce. Combine the maple syrup and hot chocolate powder in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly. Simmer for five minutes, until the sauce is hot and thick.[9] Drizzle the sauce over each pancake or on top of a stack.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 13.jpg
  4. Garnish with marshmallow. Hot chocolate is often served with marshmallows, so why not serve hot chocolate pancakes with marshmallows, too? For a gooier treat, roast or melt the marshmallows on the pancakes slightly with a cooking torch, first.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 14.jpg
    • Alternatively, try spreading marshmallow crème onto the pancakes.[10]
  5. Transform them into peppermint hot chocolate pancakes. Peppermint and chocolate are a wonderful combination for the holidays. To make a simple peppermint chocolate sauce, add of peppermint extract to the chocolate fudge or hot chocolate sauce.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 15.jpg
    • Top each pancake with a drizzle of peppermint chocolate sauce and a sprinkle of crushed peppermint candies.[11]
  6. Experiment with all kinds of other toppings. If you're making hot chocolate pancakes for a dessert, or offering up a pancake buffet, the sky is the limit on your toppings. Think of the kinds of things you might eat with an ice cream sundae.
Make Hot Chocolate Pancakes Step 10.jpg

EditWarnings

  • Take caution not over-mix the pancake batter or the pancakes will end up dry and rubbery.
  • Avoid hot chocolate mixes that contain dairy, as this can change the texture of the pancakes.[13]
  • Don’t stack the pancakes on top of each other, or they’ll get soggy.[14]

EditThings You'll Need

  • Griddle
  • Spatula
  • 2 medium-sized bowls
  • Wooden spoon
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan
  • Ladle
  • Large plate
  • Serving plate

How to Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog

Few things are as aromatically repugnant as a dog sprayed by a skunk. That smelly odor has a bad habit of lingering and spreading as well. Usually, the smell is the biggest problem. However, skunk spray can occasionally cause some minor (or even serious) health issues in the sprayed dog. You can help avoid all of this by knowing how to care for a skunk-sprayed dog.

EditSteps

EditTreating a Skunk-Sprayed Dog

  1. Understand the chemistry. The smelly part of the skunk spray is from chemicals called thiols.[1] These awful-smelling oils make the scent “stick” to the sprayed dog. Unfortunately, you cannot simply shampoo and rinse these oils away.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • Also, skip the tomato juice myth because that will not eliminate the oils either.
  2. Mix a homemade solution to remove the oils. There are special chemical solutions used to remove substances containing thiols. You can mix a mild form of this solution at home that is safe for your dog. The following formula will make enough to scrub a small- or medium-sized dog. Double or even triple the amounts for very large dogs. You should mix:[2]
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    • 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
    • 1/4 cup baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon liquid hand soap
  3. Wear gloves. The solution has the potential to irritate your skin, so you should wear gloves when you mix and use it. You also want to wear gloves to avoid transferring any of the skunk smell to yourself while handling the stinky dog.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 3 Version 4.jpg
    • The solution may irritate your dog’s skin as well, especially if the pet is prone to skin infections or other skin conditions. In these cases, consult your veterinarian before using the solution.
  4. Apply the solution outside. In addition to keeping the smelly dog from spreading the smell inside, you want to use the solution outside because the peroxide can potentially stain wood, cloth furniture, and other household items.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 4 Version 4.jpg
  5. Scrub the dog with the solution. Gently scrub the dog with the solution, but be careful to avoid the eyes and inner ears. Allow the solution to sit for up to five minutes but no more than that. Rinse the dog very thoroughly since the peroxide can discolor fur.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 5 Version 4.jpg
    • If the smell remains, you may have to repeat the process.
  6. Dry your dog well. Make sure you dry the dog well before allowing him back in the house. You should also keep an eye on him during this period and watch for other complications from being sprayed.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • If your dog gets wet at all within a week or so, you may faintly notice the skunk smell again. Try not to bathe your dog again for a week.
  7. Do not store the solution. The solution will lose its effectiveness from sitting, so you should make and use it immediately. Do not store the solution for future use if you make too much.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 7.jpg
  8. Use a skunk-removal spray or shampoo. There are also shampoos formulated for removing skunk spray from a dog’s coat. However, they’re more expensive than the ingredients for the homemade solution, and they likely will not work as well. Your veterinarian may suggest one of these shampoos instead of the solution if your dog is prone to skin conditions that make the homemade solution inadvisable.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 8.jpg

EditWatching Your Dog for Possible Complications

  1. Watch for eye irritation. The spray can cause extreme irritation if it hits the eyes directly. If your dog shows signs of eye irritation—frequently pawing at the eyes, reddened and tearing eyes, eye swelling, squinting, or hard-to-open eyes—try to rinse your dog’s eyes carefully with plain tap water. You should also immediately contact a veterinarian.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 9.jpg
  2. Pay attention for respiratory irritation. Dogs can also inhale the spray, leading to irritation to the respiratory system, including the nose. This may cause sneezing, nasal discharge, or drooling. Contact a veterinarian immediately if you notice these symptoms after a skunk encounter.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 10.jpg
  3. Follow up with a rabies vaccine booster. While the spray of skunks does not carry the rabies virus, skunks are big carriers of rabies. Any time a dog encounters a skunk, there is a chance of exposure to the virus. Consult with your veterinarian after your dog has been sprayed to discuss a rabies vaccine booster to keep your pet safe.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 11.jpg
  4. Watch for lethargy, weakness, or loss of appetite. A very rare but serious condition called Heinz body hemolytic anemia can occur in a dog sprayed by a skunk.[3] This is an emergency. A veterinarian must treat the dog for this potentially life-threatening condition. Signs of the anemia include pale mucous membranes, rapid heartbeat, panting, or a weak pulse.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 12.jpg
    • In a more gradual onset, the dog may be lethargic, weak, and refuse to eat. Signs can occur up to a few days after the dog has been sprayed by the skunk.

EditReducing the Chances of Skunk Encounters

  1. Keep a close eye on your dog. If you have a very large, open backyard, consider fencing in a portion to keep your dog out of trouble and away from skunks.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 13.jpg
  2. Use tightly fitting lids on trashcans. Skunks seek human garbage, so use garbage cans with tightly fitting lids. This helps prevent the odors from tempting skunks and other animals.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 14.jpg
  3. Purchase chemical skunk deterrents. You can buy special deterrents online or at garden supply stores to protect your yard from skunk invasion.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 15.jpg
  4. Cover any openings around your home. Skunks may try to live under decks or other structures around your home. To prevent this, seal any openings large enough for a skunk.
Care for a Skunk Sprayed Dog Step 16.jpg
  5. Contact a local animal control officer. If you know you have a skunk problem around your yard or neighborhood, contact your local animal control. Depending on where you live, they may set traps or offer to come deal with the animals if you set your own traps.
Know if a Cat Is a Stray Step 4.jpg

EditTips

  • Some people report that skunks like to dig in their soft garden dirt for delicious worms and grubs, but that planting a hedge of marigolds around the perimeter discourages this behavior.
  • Coyote urine on cotton pads placed around the perimeter of your property can deter skunks, raccoons, and possums.

How to Clean a Metal Backsplash

Metal backsplashes are appealing because they are so resistant to damage. Still, regular cleaning is useful to prevent ugly stains from setting. The first step is always to blot up the stain and wipe it off with plain water. Tougher stains can be treated with soapy water, baking soda, or vinegar. When you are finished, rinse and dry the backsplash to make it look as good as new.

EditSteps

EditCleaning General Stains

  1. Find the direction of the metal’s grain. Look closely at the metal backsplash. The metal particles may appear to move in a certain direction, such as side to side. If your backsplash has a noticeable grain, always scrub in the direction of it. This will prevent the metal from taking on tiny scratches.[1]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 1.jpg
  2. Dampen a microfiber cloth in warm water. Use a microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Metal brushes and scrub pads will scratch your backsplash, so avoid them. Warm water cleaning, when done routinely, limits the need for deeper cleaning. Never use hot water on the backsplash.[2]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 2.jpg
    • A mild detergent, such as a dish soap like Dawn or a non-chloride cleanser, can also be used for extra cleaning strength. Add a drop or two of the detergent to the water.[3]
  3. Wipe off the stains with the cloth. Use the microfiber cloth to clean the backsplash. Work in circular motions along the grain. Most of the time, the day’s stains will come right off. Older stains are likely to require deeper cleaning.[4]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 3.jpg
    • Never use scrub pads or wire brushes on the backsplash. These will scratch it.
  4. Dry the backsplash with a clean cloth. Get a dry cloth and use it to absorb the water on the metal. Although metal backsplashes are resistant to damage, hard water can weaken them. It’s better to dry the metal by hand so water doesn’t sit on it.
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 4.jpg

EditRemoving Stubborn Stains

  1. Combine baking soda and warm water in a bowl. Mix a cup (240 mL) of baking soda in a cup of warm water. Stir them together to form a paste.[5]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 5.jpg
  2. Let the baking soda paste dry on the stain. Apply the paste to the stain using your cloth or sponge. Wait for the paste to dry. Take a clean, dry cloth and use it to wipe off the paste. Check to see if the stain has been removed.
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 6.jpg
  3. Combine vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Mix an equal amount of vinegar and warm water. Add them to a spray bottle if possible, since this will allow you to coat the stain with an even, controlled amount of the mixture.[6]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 7.jpg
  4. Let the vinegar mixture sit on the stain for five minutes. Spray the mixture onto the stain. After five minutes, come back and prepare to finish treating the backsplash with a general wash..
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 8.jpg
  5. Wipe off the vinegar with a damp cloth. Dampen a soft cloth in warm water. Rub the cloth against the metal’s grain over the stained areas. Make sure all vinegar is removed.[7]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 9.jpg
  6. Dry the backsplash with a clean cloth. Finish up by using a soft cloth to remove the water. Make sure no water is left or else it can damage the backsplash.
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 10.jpg

EditMaintaining Metal Backsplashes

  1. Blot stains immediately. Use paper towels to blot grease and remove food spatter. Removing stains as quickly as possible prevents them from setting. Acidic food such as tomato sauce or lemon juice can damage metal over time, so don’t let those stains linger.[8]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 11.jpg
  2. Spray glass cleaner to remove fingerprints. Pick a non-chloride glass cleaner or all-surface cleaner such as Windex. Use it between washings to remove minor stains like fingerprints. Spray the cleaner across the surface of the metal. Wipe the fingerprints off with a cloth, then wipe up excess cleaner or allow it to air dry.[9]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 12.jpg
  3. Buff the metal with olive oil. To give the backsplash a shine, add a tablespoon of olive oil to a soft cloth. Spend a few minutes rubbing in the oil along the grain. Leave the oil alone and it’ll protect your backsplash from stains for a few weeks.[10]
Clean a Metal Backsplash Step 13.jpg
    • Commercial metal polish can also be used, but olive oil works well and is less expensive. Other oils, including baby oil, may also work.

EditTips

  • Scrub along the metal grain. This will prevent your backsplash from taking on tiny scratches that house bacteria and stains.
  • Never scrub metal with abrasive pads or wire brushes. Use soft sponges or microfiber cloths instead.

EditThings You’ll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Microfiber cloths or non-abrasive sponges
  • Warm water
  • Mild liquid detergent or non-chloride cleanser
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Bowl
  • Spray bottle
